Why are Start-ups, especially SaaS companies investing in UX/UI
Users become your product’s best advocates — free of charge — when you provide them with good experiences.
I think what they have understood is, Happy customers are your best salespeople.
In fact, Harvard Business Review reported that over 20% of happy customers told 10 or more people about their experience. Users become your product’s best advocates — free of charge — when you provide them with good experiences.
5 users, Thats all it takes. A moderated or unmoderated usability study given to a group of 5 different people within your target market can help you discover up to 85% of usability issues
And Still, 50% of the times UX is too often dismissed early on in a project in particular when things get down to the budget. It is seen as a luxury rather than a necessity. I want to change that misconception.
Let’s see how expensive it really is
Steve Olenski of Forbes stated, "According to IBM, code defects are 30 times more expensive to correct than using the right information in the first place".
By creating designs and doing user research during the design phase, rather than the development phase, you can avoid hundreds of hours of rework in functionality.
The 1:10:100 rule
Spend $1 on research or $10 to change design or $100 to change something in development. That’s a pretty clear choice, isn’t it? Actually it’s not about “reducing cost” it’s about AVOIDING cost.
How?
(# of changes) x (avg. hrs/change) x (cost of developer) x (4, if late) = cost savings
Example: (20 changes)x(8hrs each)x($120/hr) = $19200 if fixed early OR $76.800 if changed during development
(time saved) x (employee cost) x (# of employees) = cost savings
Example: (1 hr/week) x ($30/hr) x (1000 employees) = $30,000/ week or $15,000,000/year
Before wrapping here, Some real life and practical tips (from my personal experience) on how the two, Designer and Developer get along better to achieve a common goal.
Developers should validate designs and designers should validate implementations. Better products are built when designers get input on the feasibility of designs and possible alternatives. This sets up a team relationship where designers can then validate if their designs got expressed correctly when a feature is built.
Designers and Developers should try to use a common language. Each development platform will have stock interactions and if designers and developers speak the same language it makes it easier to build better products together.
Design doesn’t stop when the product starts being built. This shouldn’t be true. The best products iterate on both design and implementation as people interact with the products and help refine the design.
